Anticipation of food

Behaviours categorised as the anticipation of food are seen when a cat can see, smell or hear food being prepared or when the cat can see or smell food which is out of reach. Behaviours shown will most commonly include vocalisation (miaowing, purring), head bobbing (repeated up and down motion of the head with the neck held still), orientation towards the food source, circling, rubbing of the body and tail against the legs of a person preparing or holding the food. Attempts to reach the food source through pawing and rearing onto the hind limbs may also be seen.
